Building the BEC

At the BEC’s inception, the State of Louisiana committed $30 million in state funds contingent on LSU raising $30 million in private funds, thus making it the largest public/private capital project in LSU’s history. Loyal donors consisting of alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations, made the BEC possible along with a bridge loan from the LSU Foundation.

The LSU Business Building Oversight Committee (LBBOC) was formed in 2005 and served as the driving force in the development of the BEC, helping with the building design as well as the raising of private donations. The LBBOC consisted of select representatives of the Dean’s Advisory Council and leadership at LSU, the LSU Foundation, and the E. J. Ourso College of Business. The E. J. Ourso College is forever grateful for the outstanding support received from the volunteer members of the LBBOC.

Ikon.5 Architects in Princeton, NJ and Coleman Partners Architects in Baton Rouge were selected to design the BEC. According to the designer’s statement,

“The E. J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University is a glass and steel ‘academic village’ for business education. The courtyard site plan and building forms are contextual – recalling the sloped roof pavilions and arcaded courtyards of the adjacent historic campus. To illustrate a forward looking aesthetic that embodies the mission of the school, which is to generate business innovation in Louisiana and the Gulf region, these traditional architectural forms are constructed of contemporary materials and details.”

The BEC has since won numerous design awards including The American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge Chapter 2013 Rose Award and the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects AIA Merit Award.

The college held the BEC's ribbon-cutting ceremony March 2, 2012. Classes in the BEC were first held in fall 2012.
