BATON ROUGE – Dr. G.E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), has been appointed as chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport and Dean of the School of Medicine by President F. King Alexander and with the support of the LSU Board of Supervisors.
“Dr. Ghali is a world-renowned physician, has demonstrated strong leadership as the interim chancellor during a tumultuous time, has a proven long-term commitment to the community, and is an alumnus of the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine – making him an ideal candidate for chancellor,” Alexander said.
Previously, Dr. Ghali was a professor and chairman of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and held the Jack W. Gamble Chair in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also director of the cleft and craniofacial surgery fellowship program.
“I am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me by the Board of Supervisors and Dr. Alexander,” Dr. Ghali said. “I pray that in the coming months and years, I will prove worthy of this trust as we look to expand our efforts and strengthen our academic reputation. These are exciting and challenging times in the life of our LSU Health Sciences Center. I look forward to serving alongside an outstanding faculty, staff, administration and student body as we seek to continue the tradition of this great university and provide a smooth transition.”
Dr. Ghali graduated with degrees in medicine (LSU School of Medicine, Shreveport) and dentistry (Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas). He served an internship in general surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, and an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the same institution. He held a fellowship in head and neck oncologic surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Ghali and his wife, Hope, have four children.
