Title:
National Wildlife Refuges in Louisiana from Nature Conservancy Source Data, Geographic NAD83, LOSCO (1998) [refuges]
Description:
Abstract:
These data represent the polygon boundaries of National Wildlife Refuges in southcentral United States. National Widlife Refuges are administered and owned by federal agencies.

This is a subset of a larger data set produced for the Southcentral United States by the Nature Conservancy.

The National Wildlife Refuges are digitized from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service FOR STATUS ONLY maps by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). As of June 1997 these data are the primary source of digital NWR boundaries for the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Purpose:
TNC uses these data for Ecoregional Planning and Education, but not for legal applications. GAP Analysis Projects in Louisiana obtain their NWR boundaries from these data.

This data set in geographic coordinates, NAD83 is a reference data set for the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office.

Supplemental_Information:
The metadata for this data set are encapsulated into several documents and graphics files. The metadata are not complete if you did not receive the following files along with the data set:

Use_Constraints:
This data set was derived from a TNC dataset that had specific Use_Constraints. It inherits those Use_Constraints as given below, and has additional Use_Constraints imposed by the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office. In the TNC Use_Constraints, the 'this digital file' referred to applied to the original metadata file. These data are a subset in a different coordinate system with additional processing. Of necessity and reason the metadata file with these data differs from the original to reflect that processing and to conform more closely to the Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata.

Nature Conservancy Use Constraints

The accompanying digital data were produced by The Nature Conservancy using private funds and are subject to copyright protection. These data may be used and distributed freely under two conditions: First, this digital file must accompany every copy of these data. Second, every publication or other public depiction of these data (with the exception of generalized materials that do not credit any sources at all) must include (e.g., printed on every map depicting these data) by the following credit, disclaimer, and notice of responsibility:

'The National Wildlife Refuges were digitized from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service FOR STATUS ONLY maps by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Louisiana. These boundaries are corrected and revised regularly, but no warranty is made regarding their accuracy.'

Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office (LOSCO) Use Constraints

These unaltered data may not be redistributed without all of the elements of the metadata listed in the Supplemental_Information section of this metadata document. It is recommended that third parties wishing to use these data obtain them from the Distributor listed in this metadata document.

If these data are altered or incorporated into another dataset, they are not to be redistributed without also: altering the name of the dataset, including a Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001-1998) compliant metadata file that describes the dataset and reflects the alteration steps that makes the new dataset different from this one, and citing this dataset in the metadata as a source for the altered dataset using the source citation specified below.

If these digital data are used in the production of a report or in the compilation of a standalone printed map, then this dataset is to be cited in the report or on the map using the source citation specified below.

The following source citation is to be used when citing this dataset: LOSCO Environmental Baseline Inventory Dataset 'National Wildlife Refuges in Louisiana from Nature Conservancy Source Data, Geographic NAD83, LOSCO (1998) [refuges].'

Users hereby agree to abide by the use and reproduction conditions specified above. By using the data described in these metadata, the user acknowledges that the terms and conditions of use have been read and that the user is bound by these criteria.

Data_Quality_Information:

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Dataset has polygon topology with no dangles and no unlabeled polygons. Fifteen sliver polygons exist where the Mississippi River forms the border of the state of Louisiana with Mississippi or where the borders of Arkansas and Louisiana meet. These polygons have attribute state = MS, MS LA, or AR and result from the fact that these polygons from the source data set extended within the boundary enclosed by the Louisiana clipping polygon used.

Inholdings within National Wildlife Refuge areas create islands which are not part of the NWR. These are marked TOPOLOGY = out.

Completeness_Report:
TNC attempted to include all National Wildlife Refuges in the data set area.

Process_Description:
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Louisiana digitized the boundaries of The National Wildlife Refuges from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service FOR STATUS ONLY maps. The digitization was accomplished with Delta Data Systems AGIS software for GIS. The resulting data were cleaned and additional digitization from Landsat TM imagery was accomplished using MicroImages TNTmips for GIS.

Process_Description:
The source data set (MAV97NWR) from the Nature Conservancy, an ArcView shapefile in Albers Conical Equal Area projection NAD83, was converted to an Arc/Info coverage, projected to geographic coordinates, NAD83, then clipped to the Louisiana state boundary with STAGEOG3DPCLP to produce the coverage refuges. The coverage was converted to a shapefile of the same name.
