Each grid arc has been densified with intermediate vertices to allow the grid to be accurately projected to other coordinate systems. Each arc that forms a side of a 100K grid cell has at least one, but no more than 5 intermediate vertices between its starting and ending nodes.
This dataset is defined to be in geographic coordinates, NAD83. If it is used directly with other vector themes in geographic coordinates, NAD83, the dataset faithfully represents a regular 100K grid. It will not, however represent the exact footprint of most 100K paper map and DRG products because most of those products were based on a regular 100K geographic grid relative to the NAD27 datum. Because of an approximate 25m coordinate shift between the two datums, the physical area covered by each cell of this grid (under its NAD83 definition) is slightly different from the physical area covered by most corresponding 100K paper maps or DRGs, hence the wording 'depicts the nominal footprints of standard USGS 100K quadrangle maps'.
