Title:
'Facilities' Feature Extract of Louisiana Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) Points from USGS source data, Geographic NAD83, LOSCO (1999) [facilities]
Description:
Abstract:
This data set is a subset of the complete GNIS data set for Louisiana. This subset only includes features identified as in the category of 'Facilities.' This category includes infrastructure type constructions such as airports, bridges, dams, tunnels and mines.

The attributes of each point include: the official name of the feature; the feature type; the elevation of the point in feet; the name of the parish in which the feature is located; the state FIPS code; the parish FIPS code; the name of a USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map on which the feature is shown; and the geographic coordinates of the named point.

It is important to recognize that the names in this database are those that are recognized and accepted by the US Board on Geographic Names. Occasionally the same feature may have a different local name, or features that have local names may not be present at all in this dataset. The US Board on Geographic Names reviews proposals for the naming and renaming of features, but not all proposals are accepted.

Because the Louisiana GNIS has been completed at the Phase II level, it includes information compiled from a variety of sources: all named features on the most current largest scale USGS topographic maps, names from the U.S. Forest Service maps and the charts of the National Ocean Service, complete information from the files of the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Communications Commission, and the Army Corps of Engineers. Additionally, federally administered areas greater than 30 square miles, major and minor civil divisions, some major features too large to be named on 7.5-minute, 1:24,000-scale topographic maps, regional names, historical names, and building names have also been added when available. Roads and highways are *not* represented at this phase of GNIS.

Purpose:
To promote geographic feature name standardization and to serve as a repository of information regarding features and their name spellings. The information may be used as a reference or annotation layer in a geographical information system and for the creation of maps, charts, and other documents. These data are useful to locate features approximately on GIS data that do not have name and location available in a queryable fashion, e.g. a Digital Raster Graphic. The source geographic coordinates are accurate to within 5 seconds (approximately 500 ft) of latitude or longitude.
Supplemental_Information:
The point locations represent the approximate geographic center of areal features and the mouth of a linear feature such as a river.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
A random sample of 10% of the entries in the system were visually verified against the compilation source data (large-scale USGS topographic maps) to ensure an accuracy rate of at least 95%. (USGS test).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Locative references (geographic coordinates, topographic map, and county) are cross-checked for logical consistency. (USGS test).
Completeness_Report:
This dataset contains information about physical and cultural geographic features identified by a proper name, with the exception of most roads and highways.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy of these digital data is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to assess digital positional accuracy. On-line GNIS documentation states that the 'geographic coordinates are accurate to within 5 seconds of latitude or longitude.'

No datum specification was made in the original source data. The expected datum shifts from NAD27 to NAD83 would be less than the horizontal positional accuracy stated in the paragraph above, so a datum specification is probably moot. Because these are points named on maps, and almost all USGS maps are based on the NAD27 datum, the assumption of NAD27 for the geographic coordinates in the source data is reasonable.

LAGNIS data was imported in Excel for cleanup and discarding of attributes. A delimited file exported from Excel, imported into ArcView, and a shape created based on the NAD27 (assumed) geographic coordinates. The shape was converted to an Arc/Info coverage, projected to geographic coordinates, NAD83, then converted back to a shape. The shape was subset of include only features in the category of 'Facilities.'

Attribute_Label: name
Attribute_Definition:
A variable-length uppercase and lowercase alphanumeric entry that contains the official name of the feature. In most cases the name includes a generic that indicates the feature type. Some names are followed by a parenthetical entry that provides additional information about the name; for example, Gold Town (site), Seven Springs (flowing), Big Flat (mud. Two special terms are used in parentheses. The word historical signifies a feature that no longer exists, and the word subdivision indicates a named population cluster within another populated place or civil division.

Attribute_Definition:
The feature class terms and abbreviations currently consist of nine or fewer letters and were chosen for computer search and retrieval purposes. They do not necessarily represent terminology for the identification of all kinds of cultural and natural features. Although some of the terms may agree with dictionary definitions, they represent more generalized categories. Some commonly used generics are listed in parentheses at the end of each entry to assist in understanding the range of cultural and natural entities represented by the term.
